Ministries Convention
Discipleship in Action
|
|
Last weekend, the Ontario Conference hosted Ministries Convention 2024 at the Sheraton Parkway North Hotel and Convention Centre in Richmond Hill, with the theme "Discipleship in Action." This was the first convention since the COVID shutdown, and nearly 900 individuals attended.
The convention started with Friday evening worship and workshops amidst howling winds and a snowstorm that resulted in more than one accident around the surrounding streets and highways—but people still came in numbers. One member shared: "I was thinking of not coming because, at my age, I'm not that good at driving in the snow." She continued, "But the Holy Spirit said I MUST come! So I got an Uber, and I am here, and I have been blessed! I'm glad I listened to the Spirit!"
Pastor Chanda Nunes-Henry, Vice President for Administration of the Nevada-Utah Conference, preached the message in the evening worship. She shared the story of the demoniac in Matthew, chapter 8, demonstrating how his testimony transformed a town from initially kicking Jesus out of town to flocking to him upon his return. She pressed the point home that each person's testimony can transform a city if we are only willing to share it. |

Sabbath morning began with a dynamic Sabbath School lesson led by Ontario Conference Pastor Marcio Gerley Alves de Sousa. By Divine service, it was standing-room-only attendance. Worship was lively and rich as nearly 900 voices praised God with hymns and praise and sang the convention theme song "I Will Go." Pastor Daniel Ebenezer, Associate Director of Sabbath School for the General Conference, challenged attendees to recognize their role as disciple-makers. He stressed that church attendance alone does not fulfill this mandate. He highlighted the Discipleship Handbook (Check your local ABC store for copies) as a valuable resource designed to equip every member with actionable steps to disciple others in Christ. |

Throughout the day, relevant workshops addressed modern-day ministry challenges, ranging from relationships and church planting to stewardship and digital evangelism. Many members expressed excitement about the knowledge they gained from their workshops and were eager to apply it in their local church.

Pastor Guillermo Biaggi, General Vice President of the General Conference, reminded members that as Adventists, we need to bring hope to a world in confusion—the hope that only Jesus can provide. He shared a stirring story of Luba, a woman with a congenital disability that prevented her from travelling outside her home. "She had a burning desire to tell people about Jesus," He said. "The question in my mind was, How?" Luba shared how she was interviewed by a radio station, where she spoke of her love of Jesus and her hope and joy in Him despite her circumstances. That interview resulted in many listeners calling her to learn more about Jesus, and 40 people were baptized.
A significant moment of the Sabbath afternoon service was the inaugural land acknowledgement, read by Pastor Mansfield Edwards. Land acknowledgements recognize and respect Indigenous peoples as the traditional stewards of the land and their enduring relationship with it. Indigenous Chief Clifford Bull followed with his statement, "I proclaim the Lord Jesus as Lord and Saviour!" to which the participants responded with a resounding amen. He made an impassioned plea for outreach to indigenous communities. He emphasized that understanding cultural contexts and historical injustices done to indigenous people is essential if Adventist churches are to minister to them successfully. |

The day's high point was the baptism of two individuals, a first in Ministries Convention history (Read about their decision to come to Jesus in the next article). Convention participants were involved by giving an affirming vote to accept the candidates into the Seventh-day Adventist Church membership subject to baptism. Then, everyone watched with joy and excitement via live stream as they were baptized in the downstairs hotel swimming pool.
In the afternoon program, President Jakov Bibulović of the Ontario Conference outlined the strategic goals for church growth over the next few years. He mentioned the goals of planting 28 churches and growing the Conference by 10,000 members by 2028. He also noted the results of Ontario church growth surveys, which highlighted a high need for leadership development. "If we are to achieve the goals set out by the church, we must ensure each church is developing its current and future leaders and putting structures in place to ensure that your churches are operating "on mission," which is the Great Commission." He also highlighted a surprising survey finding: many members feel their local church lacks loving relationships. " How can we show the love of Jesus to the community if we are not feeling it in our churches?" He shared that while initiatives are in place at the Conference, actual change will require each member to become an agent of change by being reflections of Jesus and His love for others, starting in their homes and churches.
The convention ended with a stirring closing charge from Pastor Balvin Braham, Vice President of the Inter-American Division. His rousing message ended with calling forward all Ontario Conference directors and asking all participants to pray for them as "they have been chosen to lead the conference for this time." This was followed by a call for all pastors to come forward, for everyone to recognize and support their leadership in helping manage overall church growth, and to pray for their churches. Finally, all attendees were called to stand to support God's ministry in Ontario. Every member then sang with passion the theme song, "I Will Go," followed by a closing prayer of consecration by Pastor Biaggi.
Of the many members who attended Ministries Convention, a number were international visitors. One was Sister Cunningham from New York, who hadn't missed a convention since it was called the "Festival of the Laity." When asked about her impression of the 2024 Convention, she hailed it as "off the chain!"
"I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit, the workshops were relevant, and watching the baptism showed how powerfully the Lord worked during this event." Her sentiments echoed countless others who left inspired, empowered, and eager to elevate their ministries to new heights.

A Walk in the Park
Leads to Two Baptisms
|
|
[L-R] Jessica, Karen, Ligia and Sean
|
|
As Jessica and Sean strolled through the park, the gentle breeze whispered through the trees, carrying with it the promise of a new day. For them, this morning routine of finding a place for prayer amidst God's creation was a time to praise Him and speak to Him about their triumphs and challenges while watching the beauty of a sunset and marvelling at God's handiwork.
As they concluded their worship, Sean's ears perked up at the sound of Spanish being spoken nearby. While fluent in other languages, Spanish remained a mystery to him. However, his wife Jessica was fluent in Spanish. That sparked an idea in Sean's mind.
"Jessica, you should go over and talk to them," Sean suggested, his eyes gleaming with anticipation. "It could be a witnessing opportunity."
Jessica hesitated, her shy nature momentarily holding her back. But she knew the importance of friendship evangelism, and with a deep breath, she mustered the courage to approach the group.
Engaging them in conversation, Jessica soon discovered they were from El Salvador, her home country. This initial encounter blossomed into a genuine friendship, eventually leading to an invitation to a Christmas dinner at their home.
At the dinner, two additional friends, Karen and Ligia, joined the gathering. Sean and Jessica welcomed them into their circle of friends, and before long, Karen and Ligia became regular attendees at their church.
Through Bible studies with Sean and Jessica, both Karen and Ligia developed a deep love for Jesus. While Karen decided to be baptized relatively quickly, Ligia took more time to think.
During their attendance at the Ministries Convention, Ligia's heart was stirred in a conversation with a pastor about John the Baptist. The words, "I'm not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandals," affected her deeply. John was committed and loved Jesus. She loved Jesus and was grateful for his sacrifice on the cross and His work in preparing a place for her in Heaven. Her reluctance to fully commit to Him, though He made the ultimate sacrifice for her, made her feel unworthy.
She realized Bible studies were not enough, and Ligia felt compelled to demonstrate her love and commitment to Jesus. She wanted to show the world she was committed to Jesus through baptism.

|
|
Karen and Ligia declared their love and commitment to Jesus in front of nearly 900 people at the Ministries Convention and were baptized in the hotel pool.
Sean and Jessica's ministry of making disciples and sharing the gospel continues. They are currently working alongside their friends from that fateful dinner and others who have joined. They hope to see seven individuals commit their lives to Jesus in baptism soon. For Sean and Jessica, making disciples is a walk in the park.
God calls all of us to make disciples. Who could you introduce yourself to today?

A Picture Is Worth
40+ Empowered Ministry Leaders
|
|
Participants at the Ministries Convention were treated to an interactive session on the art of cellphone photography during a communication workshop aimed at enhancing ministry outreach and storytelling. Four professional photographers led the workshop, which attracted a diverse audience comprising communication secretaries, pastors, North American Division officers, school administrators, and church members.
The session commenced with a brief in-class lesson, during which attendees were introduced to the fundamental principles of composition and framing. Eager to put theory into practice, participants were divided into groups and asked to capture compelling images around the hotel premises.
Under the expert guidance of the instructors, each group received personalized training, focusing on techniques to elevate their photography skills. Despite the time constraint, participants produced a remarkable array of photos that showcased what they learned.
|
|
|
When the group returned, they shared their photos and received constructive feedback from peers and seasoned photographers. One participant shared, "I learned how to really take pictures, not just press the button on my phone."
Pastor Shawn Ellis, the Communication and Media Director, mentioned the significance of visual storytelling in today's digital landscape. "In the 21st century, media has become an important part of sharing the Gospel and conveying a message," he remarked. "Many members now submit pictures of different aspects of their ministry using the camera that everybody carries in their hand—their cellphone."
Highlighting the workshop's broader impact, Pastor Ellis emphasized its role in providing the tools to empower individuals to share their stories effectively, compellingly, and impactfully, whether through official publications or personal networks.
The workshop's overwhelmingly positive reception has prompted Communication and Media Ministries to consider more training schedules. Readers are encouraged to stay tuned for future training opportunities.
