KAPOW LIKE JESUS Holland Landing Children’s Conference Brings Bible Superheroes to Life

Patricia Lopez, Children’s Ministry Director for the Ontario Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, stood on the stage at the Holland Landing Seventh-day Adventist Church dressed in black with a blue cape and a matching mask resting on her forehead. Looking out at the eager children before her, she announced, “Boys, when you see the word Kapow come up on the screen, I want you to shout your loudest ‘KAPOW!’ And girls, you’re going to respond, ‘LIKE JESUS!’ Ready? Let’s try it!”
In an instant, the boys roared, “KAPOW!” and the girls echoed joyfully, “LIKE JESUS!” The church filled with energy—a perfect tone-setter for the message that followed.
“What stood out for me was the way they were engaged and invested in the sermon and paying attention to the five key lessons they could ‘Kapow Like Jesus’. I loved seeing their enthusiasm and willingness to participate,” shared Patricia Lopez, the guest speaker of the event.
This year marked the second annual Children’s Conference hosted by the Holland Landing Church, continuing the theme “Superheroes of the Bible.” The theme, chosen by Pastor Lloyd Wilson, Sanyt Coronado, and the Children’s Ministry (CM) committee, resonated deeply with today’s young audiences.
“Recognising that today’s children often look to social media personalities as heroes, we wanted to introduce them to Bible heroes who embody qualities worth emulating. The goal was to help children see that they themselves can be superheroes by standing up for good, just like the figures in Scriptures,” one CM committee member shared.
The two-day event began Friday night with the youth of the church fully organising and leading the program. They presented a skit comparing Deborah to Wonder Woman, followed by a lively performance by the Genesis Puppet Ministry depicting King Nebuchadnezzar’s encounter with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Children and Pastor Lloyd Wilson eagerly joined in.
Sabbath morning was filled with activities, interactive praise, and back-to-back programming—from Sabbath School to Divine Service, through lunch, and ending with an Adventist Youth (AY) afternoon program. The theme song, “My God Is Powerful,” was sung with enthusiasm. Genesis Puppet Ministry returned during the children’s story to highlight brave women of the Bible, and during the AY program they performed a dynamic skit of David and Goliath, again with Pastor Wilson’s help.
“The most memorable moment for me was during the skit when David defeated Goliath,” reflected Deedra Deterville of Genesis Puppet Ministry. “Hearing the children cheer, ‘Jesus wins! Jesus wins!’ filled the room with such joy and faith. It was a powerful reminder that God can, and will, defeat any giant we face.”
Throughout the conference, the children’s engagement was clear. They sang with enthusiasm, shouted “KAPOW! LIKE JESUS!” at every cue, and eagerly participated in every activity. They shared their love for Jesus and left with a greater understanding of the Superheroes of the Bible—and what it means to be a hero for Christ.
Patricia Lopez also shared a personal highlight. “I had several memorable moments, as it was an event curated with such love and intentionality for our children. But as a mother, seeing my 13-year-old daughter—who was a stranger at the church before this Sabbath—welcomed so fully by the young people, and watching her shy reserve melt away because she felt so comfortable, touched my mama heart. It reflected the true purpose of the event. It was meant to be an outreach program to touch the hearts of youth who came through the doors, and I saw evidence in my own home that it did just that. I’m so touched and grateful. It was a blessing for both of us.”
Pastor Wilson, Sanyt Coronado, and the team plan to host another Children’s Conference next year. For them and the Holland Landing Church family, this event is more than a program—it is a ministry that matters.
“It’s more than just an event; it’s a chance to inspire young hearts with timeless stories and values as they discover their own inner heroes. We warmly invite you to be part of this incredible journey next year!” expressed another member of the committee.
So mark your calendars—and the next time you feel like a superhero, or need strength to face the “giant” in your life, don’t forget to shout: “KAPOW! LIKE JESUS!”
