A New Beginning: Ottawa Adventist Filipino Group Officially Launched
December 4, 2025 | Leo Launio | Ottawa Filipino Seventh-day Adventist Group
On November 8, 2025, a joyous milestone took place in the nation’s capital as the Ottawa Adventist Filipino Group was officially launched. This historic gathering marked the beginning of a new spiritual home for Filipino Adventists in Ottawa, bringing together families, friends, and visitors for a Sabbath filled with worship, fellowship, and inspiration. More than 60 people attended the inaugural service, representing churches from across the region, including Nepean, Ottawa East, Lily of the Valley, Kanata, and the First Filipino-Canadian Adventist Churches. Their presence demonstrated strong support, solidarity, and enthusiasm for this newly formed group, which aims to serve the Filipino community and beyond.
The Sabbath worship started with a Sabbath School program led by Lanie Porlucas. Sam Adriatico, together with his team from the First Filipino-Canadian Seventh-day Adventist Church, facilitated an engaging and thoughtful study of the lesson. Their leadership sparked lively discussions, heartfelt sharing, and spiritual reflection—reminding everyone that Sabbath School remains the heartbeat of church fellowship and Bible learning.
The highlight of the program was the message delivered by Pastor Leo Launio, who reminded attendees of God’s unwavering faithfulness and the calling to expand His kingdom. Drawing from Scripture and the history of Adventist mission work, he emphasised the importance of unity, perseverance, and intentional discipleship as the group begins its journey. His message resonated deeply with the congregation, setting the tone for a hopeful and prayerful future.
In the afternoon, attendees gathered once again for a practical and uplifting church growth seminar, also facilitated by Pastor Launio. The colloquium examined the rationale for church planting, practical strategies for nurturing emerging groups, principles of sustainable ministry, and the crucial role of discipleship in fostering healthy congregations. Participants expressed appreciation for the insights shared, noting that the seminar had equipped them with tools to better serve the new group and support the broader work of the church in Ottawa.
Throughout the day, warmth, fellowship, and a sense of shared purpose permeated the atmosphere. Families enjoyed reconnecting with friends from different congregations, children participated in special activities, and ministry leaders discussed their hopes and plans for the months ahead. Many attendees expressed excitement about the possibilities the Ottawa Seventh-day Adventist Filipino Group offers—not only as a worshipping community but also as a centre for outreach, youth development, cultural fellowship, and spiritual revival.
Debra Sims, Gerardo Duyo, and several families have committed to continuing the weekly worship services, and they hope that more members will join them in the weeks and months ahead.
The launch of the Ottawa Adventist Filipino Group stands as a testament to God’s faithfulness and the resilience of His people. It reminds us that wherever believers gather—in homes, community centres, or newly formed groups—God builds His church one heart at a time. As the group advances, its mission remains clear: to uplift Christ, strengthen families, reach the Filipino community in Ottawa, and contribute to the expanding ministry of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the region.
