A Call to Prayer and Support for Venezuela
Posted: June 29th, 2026

On Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at 6:05 p.m., two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck Venezuela in rapid succession, leaving a trail of devastation across Caracas and Maiquetía. At the time of this writing, official reports confirm at least 164 deaths, more than 100 injuries, and the collapse of numerous buildings, although these figures continue to be updated as rescue efforts progress.*
Because June 24 was a statutory holiday and the earthquakes struck during the World Cup, many families were gathered together in their homes. As a result of the high number of people indoors, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimates there is a 42% probability that the final death toll could reach between 10,000 and 100,000.
This tragedy has also touched our own church family. Pastor Ney Devis has confirmed the heartbreaking loss of a 7-year-old girl from our congregation, and several church members and their families remain missing. We continue to pray for those who are grieving, those who are awaiting news of loved ones, and the many communities affected by this disaster.
We invite you to join us in earnest prayer, asking God to comfort those who mourn, protect those involved in rescue efforts, and provide strength and hope to all who have been impacted.
Thank you for your prayers, compassion, and faithful support during this time of great need.
As the psalmist reminds us, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1).
May the Lord bless you and continue to use His church as an instrument of hope and healing.
David Manrique
Pastor, Toronto Spanish Seventh-day Adventist Church
