In the Face of Persecution

I’ve heard it said that Seventh-day Adventists have a persecution complex.  Whether it’s a fair question or not is open to debate, but it’s difficult to be around some Adventists for long without hearing something about persecution.

From the very start of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the United States, the founders believed that Bible prophecy pointed to a time when Sabbath keepers will face severe persecution.  The introduction of so-called Blue Laws by some municipalities and towns in the 1880s, prohibiting work on Sundays, strengthened this belief and it became part of Adventist DNA.

It appears that some Adventists have developed a passion to watch out for persecution and excitedly sound an alarm if they sense any indication, real or imagined, that it’s just around the corner.  I wonder what they made of the *World Watch List 2023, report that 360 million Christians around the world in 2022 were experiencing high levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith.  Of this number, 312 million suffered severe levels (including death) for their faith in Jesus.

Why Is Camp Meeting 2023 Taking Place at the International Centre and Not at Camp New Lowell?

Ontario Camp meeting 2023 returns to the International Centre, Mississauga, for the first time since 2019, on June 2.

Camp meeting 2023 will be the first in-person gathering held by the Ontario Conference since the pandemic, and many people have been waiting to renew the fellowship of their brothers and sisters amidst the camp meeting atmosphere.

“We’re eagerly looking forward to being back together,” says Pastor Mansfield Edwards. “For almost three years, we have been separated, some in isolation, so it will be a good opportunity to join together and worship God in thanksgiving, for He has led us and sustained us through the pandemic.”

As news of the camp meeting date and location reached the churches, some people are asking why we are returning to the International Centre and not going to the new campground at New Lowell.

“When the Lord blessed us with the new campground, our first plan was for it to be the site for camp meetings,” says Pastor Edwards.

“We were even hoping that 2022 could have been a trial year on a smaller scale. However, as Pathfinder camps and churches began holding weekend events there, we recognised that it could not hold a larger event until we put more infrastructure in place.  We want our members to have a good first-time experience.

“We have been diligently working to improve the infrastructure, but it will not be ready for this year. Since we are presently unable to use the site for a camp meeting, we did not want to miss another year of an in-person gathering.  So, we look forward to seeing as many people as possible joining us at the International Centre on June 2.”

The International Centre is located at 6900 Airport Road, Mississauga, Ontario, L4V 1E8.

Forty Baptised as Filipino Churches Host Virtual Music Night and Digital Evangelism during Pandemic

Forty new converts were baptised during the first-ever virtual music night and digital evangelism outreach organised by the twelve Filipino congregations in the Ontario Conference.

The Filipino Adventist Coordinating Council (FAMCC) of the twelve congregations determined it would not allow the restrictions of the pandemic to prevent them from serving the Lord, and launched the event back in late 2020.

The lay-led digital evangelistic outreach featured local church pastors as speakers. Pastors Mansfield Edwards, and Jakov Bibulovic, Ontario Conference president and executive secretary, were guest speakers.

Explosive Growth Drives Adventist Church
in Africa

President Ted Wilson takes eight-country trip to encourage members

Africa | Andrew McChesney
28 February 2023

The Holy Spirit is moving in a powerful way in Africa as the Seventh-day Adventist Church experiences explosive growth that is giving members extraordinary opportunities to witness, Adventist world church leader Ted N.C. Wilson said after a whirlwind tour of eight countries.

Wilson, whose trip included visits with heads of state and tribal royalty, praised the faithfulness of church members and said Africa serves as an example of what the Holy Spirit can do worldwide.

“God is doing something amazing in Africa,” Wilson said. “We praise His name for the enormous growth and influence our members are now having on society because of their sheer numbers and faithful witness.”
