Consultation Coordinator, Sandy Lake First Nation

Charles Meekis

Charles Meekis is very passionate about helping people who live in First Nation remote communities because he knows what it’s like to live there. He grew up in Sandy Lake First Nation and is a band member. He knows what it feels like to not know about the history of colonialism and how it continues to affect everyone today. He went to school to understand this, and he currently holds a degree from Trent University in Peterborough where he lived for 8 years to attend this post secondary institution.

He is very keen and aware of this and that he wants to do his part in looking at ways to improve, not only health in communities, but also education. However, it cannot continue its current trajectory as this has to change.

A lot of young people have asked him about Indigenous Knowledge and he tells them what he knew and have learned from his elders growing up. Charles also enjoy hunting and living out on the land, this is also what he had learned from his elders. It is this Indigenous knowledge that will help people to stand their ground. That is what he believes in.

Charles Meekis has a 2-year diploma in Native Studies from Trent University as well as a 4-year Honours Degree in Indigenous Studies.
